CAPTAIN JOHNSON NOW IN CHARGE OF FERGUSON SITUATION

“I’m going to march with you. There won’t be a police line.”

“Crowd Shouts ‘We Love You’.”  This is killing me.  I just need to take a minute to stress this.  The crowd started shouting “we love you”.

Just like that, THAT quickly, did it turn to love.  Do you see?  Before that, the police who were so intent on dehumanizing the protesters and the victims of their own abuse, were trying so hard to make them out to be violent, animalistic, hateful.  They were angry, certainly, and had the right to be.  But this just shows, in seconds flat, how quickly all that energy turns to thoughts of compassion and love just as soon as someone stops the bullying.

He did not pander to them.  He did not even tell them they were right, didn’t say what evil assholes the other cops were, didn’t say anything except that there wouldn’t be a police line, and that he would walk with them.  I will walk with you.  That simple.  I hear you, I listen to you, I will not pretend you are wrong or inhuman, and I will walk next to you.  And just with that simple gesture, that tiny little bit of compassion, immediately comes the word love.

It’s so easy for people who think they’re in a war zone to brand others as their enemy.  It’s so easy to just say “enemy” and have no idea what that means.  With nothing more than a tiny bit of understanding, just a calm word, a bit of give on your part, you can stop full on murderous inhuman unconstitutional insanity.  You can stop the pain and instantly hear words of love.  

The crowd, who had watched a friend and companion gunned down without justice, who had been beaten for standing there to say no, who had been tear gassed, shot with heavily bruising pellets, arrested without cause, laughed at, called disgusting names, the crowd shouts “we love you”.  The second someone tells them he will walk with them.
